London’s Most Romantic Date Spots
A Designer’s Guide
In my world, a restaurant is never just about the food. It’s about the mise-en-scène - the way the lighting hits the wine glass, the tactile weight of the table linens, and the way a room makes you feel. When the context is romance, you want the design to do the heavy lifting, setting the scene for intimate conversation, so you can relax into your date.
From hidden riverside pubs to immersive, cinematic rooftops, these are my top London date spots where the design narrative is as compelling as the menu.

1. Pasticceria Marchesi 1824, Mount Street
We start with what I consider London’s most beautiful bakery. Tucked right behind The Connaught, this Prada-owned Milanese icon is a masterclass in adaptive heritage. The building at 117 Mount Street originally housed Allens of Mayfair, London's oldest butcher shop (established in the 1880s).

What I love most is how they’ve preserved that history. The authentic, decorative ceramic tiled walls, the original black and yellow Siena marble floors, and even the wrought-iron butcher's hooks, and display cases have been meticulously looked after and retained. Set against their signature cherry-wood cabinetry and mint-green jacquard silk wallpaper, it’s a brilliant, luxurious juxtaposition of historic London and high-fashion Milan.
The Order: An espresso and the Sacher Torte. It’s a perfect, quiet start to a romantic day in Mayfair.
2. The Dove, Hammersmith
Sometimes the most romantic design isn’t about pristine finishes, but about centuries of patina. The Dove is a historic riverside pub tucked away on the Upper Mall in Hammersmith. Because it's hidden along a pedestrian riverside path, a quiet enclave mostly known only to locals. Its original glass conservatory hangs precariously over the Thames, and it isn't just a little rickety - it is very rickety.
But that is its charm. At sunset, the light glistens across the glass panels, dancing beautifully between the fading sunlight and the soft glow of candlelight. It is effortlessly magical.

3. Fischer’s, Marylebone
Fischer’s transports you directly into a nostalgic, early 20th-century Vienna. The detail is staggering - I particularly love the authentic Bavarian Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) detailing that lines the walls. It’s cozy, wood-paneled, and deeply atmospheric, feeling like a space that has been there for a hundred years, though executed with a modern understanding of luxury.

The Food: Think traditional schnitzels and bratwursts. It’s refined comfort food served in a space that feels like a well-kept historical secret.
4. Blanchette, Soho
Nestled in the bustling streets of Soho, Blanchette is little known by the flashbulb crowd, which is exactly why I love it. It’s all about the glow; candlelight bounces off the French Art Nouveau wall panels that frame the back bar, transporting you directly back to the time of Toulouse-Lautrec.
The Detail: The furniture is distinctively French bistro, and the wine list is unpretentious but entirely delicious. It’s the perfect spot for long, intimate conversations by candlelight.
5. Aces Food Craft, Fitzrovia
This is a brilliant new chef’s table concept that feels like a genuine discovery. Brought to life by Chef Alex Craciun and his wife Aleksandra, the menu is a highly creative fusion heavily influenced by Japanese techniques and ingredients - a nod to Alex's extensive time cooking in Tokyo. The space itself is small with very few covers, giving it a truly intimate feel.
You feel so special and looked after here; the service is beautifully attentive, pre-empting your needs without you ever feeling watched. My absolute favourite part is sitting at the nine-seater counter and watching the chefs work. There is a quiet, mesmerizing choreography to it all that elevates the entire evening.
6. Popolo, Shoreditch
There is something inherently romantic about sitting at a bar, and Popolo does this better than almost anyone. The design is raw and brutalist - the sweeping cast-concrete bar is a design triumph. It’s the perfect spot to sit shoulder-to-shoulder and watch the chefs handle exceptional pasta.
The Must-Order: Do not miss the rosemary and olive oil cake for dessert. It is unexpected, savory-sweet, and truly gorgeous.

7. Brasserie Zédel, Piccadilly
Step inside and you’re in a post-war Art Deco dream. Originally designed by David Collins Studio, it has all the glitz and glamour quintessentially of that era. But the real secret is the Bar Américain downstairs. It’s like stepping directly onto a 1930s movie set. The cocktails are wonderful, providing a total escape in the very heart of London.

8. The Cinnamon Club, Westminster
Dining inside a library is a high-design fantasy, and The Cinnamon Club delivers it perfectly. Set in the historic Grade II listed Old Westminster Library, you dine on elevated Indian cuisine surrounded by thousands of historical books.
The Tip: Come on a Sunday. They have a live jazz band that interacts with the grand, historical acoustics of the room, making it feel warm and incredibly alive.

9. Decimo at The Standard, King’s Cross
For me, design doesn't get more immersive than Decimo. It’s like stepping directly into a Wes Anderson film - cinematic, retro-cool, and deeply rooted in a 1970s aesthetic. The design perfectly mirrors the food, which is a sophisticated Spanish-Mexican fusion.
The Verdict: The Spanish Tortilla is, without exaggeration, the best I have ever had. Do not skip it.
Ultimately, my pick of most romantic spaces in London share a specific trait: they understand that a room is never just a backdrop; it is an active participant in the experience. True luxury, whether found in the preserved tiles of a historic Mayfair bakery or the sweeping concrete of a Shoreditch pasta bar, lies in how a space makes you feel.
This is the exact philosophy that drives our studio's approach. Whether we are designing a high-end residential sanctuary or a bespoke entertaining space, we believe in engineering that same sense of escape, atmosphere, and effortless intimacy. Because at the end of the day, the most successful design doesn't just look beautiful - it sets the stage for life's magic moments.
